InetSoft to Speak about Data Mashups

Opportunity for information management professionals to learn about a current trend in business intelligence

Woodbury, MN - December 15, 2008 - InetSoft Technology, an innovator in dashboard, reporting and analysis solutions, today announced an upcoming presentation to the Minnesota Chapter of the Data Management Association (DAMA-MN). Byron Igoe, Product Manager at InetSoft, will discuss the meaning and origins of data mashups and explain the differences in process between traditional data integration approaches and data mashup. The event will take place on Wednesday December 17 hosted at Fidelity Information Services in Woodbury, MN from 8:30 to 11:30AM and is a free benefit to current members of DAMA-MN.

Data mashup refers to the combination of data that was not originally intended to be combined. In the business intelligence field, it has been recognized that enterprise knowledge workers and managers have a need to flexibly incorporate ad hoc or sanctioned data sources in such a data mashup, as doing so can increase the value derived from corporate information systems. However, there are issues of efficiency and dependability that must be addressed.

In this presentation Byron will point out how drawbacks of traditional business intelligence software have prevented this capability and have led to subversive behavior: business users taking their data and analysis into office applications like Microsoft Excel - which has led to the problem of spreadmarts. Details will include: in-memory data federation; the impact on pre-aggregation; and combining formal and informal data sources.

"DAMA is dedicated to promoting the understanding, development and practice of managing information and data as a key enterprise asset," states Andrea Thomsen, Education Officer at DAMA-MN. "This presentation is an example of the type of educational opportunities we provide to our local chapter members each month. At our chapter meetings members can exchange problems, ideas, and experiences related to information and data resource practices." Information management professionals from enterprises or academic institutions in Minnesota who are interested in learning more about membership are invited to visit www.dama-mn.org. DAMA-MN is part of DAMA International, a not-for-profit, vendor independent association with chapters and members throughout the world.

"We expect this business intelligence topic of data mashup to be an interesting one for DAMA-MN members," notes Mark Flaherty, Vice President of Marketing. "We are interested to hear how business intelligence managers are addressing the information management demands and issues associated with data mashup – even if they have not applied this term 'data mashup' to it, yet. We believe we have an interesting, unique solution of end-user defined data mashup that maximizes self-service and minimizes the effort and overhead for IT organizations supporting business intelligence solutions, and this is a great opportunity to discuss the issues with a very interested audience."
