BI Solution for Dynamic User Requirements - And then they talk about transforming a BI solution to fit the dynamic user requirements, implementing a formal methodology, agile software development and techniques and tools to accelerate development testing. Deployment should be ongoing. Scoping should be followed by rapid iterations. Allow for evolving requirements. Use scrum sessions. Do frequent thorough testing with communication with the business. This is an IT managed process that uses a bunch of some of the new development techniques and tools that are proving to be really effective the most successful software companies and IT shops. And then the other aspect that keeps coming up is mobile devices. As we read through the blogs, the conferences, they’re coming up a lot. In addition to this, there are new hardware platforms that users are getting that allow them to be far more mobile and able to access information basically anywhere, anytime any place because these things are going with them. So as we look at the technical side of the discussion, these are the themes that seem to come up, flexible, fast, varied options, mobile, and an IT centrally managed process. The other side of that is the end user side. And a lot of the writing has been about the technical side. The end user side seems to have had less coverage in at least what we surveyed, which was pretty broad....

BI Technology That Enterprises Rely on for Business Agility - Let’s look at the business intelligence and other technology that enterprises rely on for business agility. This is possibly the most important of the slides so if you walk away from this presentation with anything, then it’s the message of this particular slide. What you see here on the vertical axis is the response time of applications. And that’s actually a logarithmic scale so every marker on that scale is actually ten times slower than the one below it. Right at the bottom we have the range of real time response, and the we have less than one tenth of a second, and above that where people interact with a computer you have about from two or three seconds down to one tenth of a second. Above that are transactional systems response ranges. You get out to about fifteen seconds. Above that you get what are really batch processes, and then you go out into minutes, and the next level is another kind of batch level that goes to hours and after that to days. Now, what we’ve drawn on this graph is a number of curves that represent years in history, starting with 1960. You see the curve gradually move in a kind of southeast direction across this graph. Gradually taking in more and more applications in terms of what computing was able to do and the direction of those arrows that are heading south east indicate an area of as yet unrealized applications. Gradually you see this curve eating up all of the potential things to do in the business sense also in a scientific sense I suppose...

BI Trends - One trend is a people trend. When you think about information consumers and the way that people expect to digest, consume, or use information, the expectations of those people are beginning to change as we see the new generation of young people entering the workforce. Their expectations of information access and consumption have been so influenced by social media. This is going to have an impact on how enterprise data is going to be consumed. Part of the impact will be on the user interface of BI tools and on the information delivery methods. There will be less emphasis on the model of logging into a business intelligence application to find out information. They will want it to just “be there.” That might mean embedding that information inside the ERP or CRM application that they always use. It might also mean embedding it in social media applications...

BI Users at a Law Firm - The different types of BI users at your law firm, you said quite a number of different reports and different kinds of users. I am guessing but I am assuming that some are looking at the reports on paper, some are printing them out? It would seem some of your analyst types probably use spreadsheets that work as well in that business intelligence environment, is that correct? Ron: Yes, that’s right. Most of our partners would be getting PDF files. We still haven’t gone to the web versions of the reports. That’s always on our list, but we never seem to quite get to it. But certainly the partners get PDF type files, and our analyst type guys can get into the cubes themselves and into the transactions. So they have a mixture of hard copy reports and getting into the detail themselves. Mark: So where do dashboards and visual analyses fit in the picture? Ron: The new dashboards come out quarterly. The moment they come out, in two ways, they come out in hard copy and still there is a reason to have hard copy. You can scribble on it and write on that. But also, we send out electronic versions to them as well, so they are getting those. They can open it up in a browser running on their PC or on a tablet, so it's with them all the time. And like I said earlier, we started rolling that out in September, and they come out each quarter. We just finished our review of the third quarter which was the March quarter. We finished reviewing that during April...

BI Visualization Tool Providers - After that synopsis of Agile BI’s definition and a discussion of what’s being said in the industry today, let’s mention some of the specific technologies involved with Agile BI. When it comes to BI visualization tools there is a variety of different providers of them. The business intelligence market has being broken into three segments. There is the classic reporting and scorecarding. There is a whole new field that’s being called data discovery and analysis where those technologies, in memory, data visualization, and predictive modeling. The cool thing is they’re being simplified down from requiring a statistics degree to something where an MBA or a reasonably savvy data management person can actually do modeling on fairly complex data today. It wasn’t possible a few years ago. And I think the extraction tools is another category. So if you take this model of ours and what I’m hearing and seeing in the analysts’ reports, you have this foundation which is the data and the data extraction piece which can be ETL. Then on top of it you have got this data discovery analysis capability. Besides that you’ve got the reporting and scorecard system. All are serving different purposes but are working together in the eco-system...

Big Data And The Need For Agile BI - One of the reasons agile BI is more in demand today is in response to increasing data access pressures. Data capture grows exponentially, and business knows there’s gold in that data. Data has grown so much, people use a new term to describe it: big data. Big data, itself, has become one of the hottest topics out there: big data. There are lots of reasons why there is so. There is just so much data out there nowadays, lots of web data and lots of operations machine generated data, lots of information that needs to be processed that people need to understand what's going on and make decisions based on the data. So today we are going to dig into this topic of visual analysis of big data...

Building Dashboards without BI Expertise - And so if we move on to next slide, it gives you the idea of how we have looked at those traditional BI challenges and how we turn them around into product development of the features and the benefits that you can get from our BI software. We have aimed for our software to be as easy as possible to both deploy and install and get set up. You can expect implementation times that are more measured in weeks, it can be as low as two weeks, if you are focused on getting the software up and running. You can have a very usable interactive dashboard built in that kind of timeframe as well. Our software is easy for end-users, whether they be the analysts, who might be specialized in information access...

Building New Cloud BI Applications - Even in established organizations that have established on-premises systems they're looking at building new cloud BI applications and particularly around analytics often to take advantage of the data gravity. The gravity being that lots of the data already in the clouds. They want to move analytics to the cloud and take advantage of it, as I mentioned here, point technology using in database processing. You've got powerful platforms out there. Why not use them effectively for churning through analytics and even for data preparation, ETL kind of activities to support analytics. We see a lot of trending towards that being able to use the parallel processing and more powerful platforms in the cloud for this. Then the other thing to mention about Cloud of courses is it's not one Cloud but many Clouds and multi-cloud. We see most organizations are using the big ones: Amazon, Microsoft, Google, but certainly even others, multi-clouds sometimes. It just works out that way that they're moved into the Cloud in different parts of the organization, moved to different Cloud systems, or it's by design because they want to avoid vendor lock-in and platform lock-in and have some flexibility there. This is certainly a feature of the Cloud these days that it isn't necessity of having analytics. It will be portable and going to solutions that can support multiple different clouds so not just one, but certainly the big ones out there if not others as they come along. Take advantage of the Cloud infrastructure...
