Roots of Business Intelligence

Business intelligence has its roots in the early days of computing, when companies first began to collect and store large amounts of data. However, the concept of BI as we know it today did not fully emerge until the 1960s and 1970s.

In the 1960s, IBM introduced the concept of "Management Information Systems" (MIS), which was designed to provide managers with access to data that could help them make better decisions. At the time, most companies used punch cards and mainframe computers to collect and store data, but this data was difficult to access and analyze. IBM's MIS system aimed to change that by providing managers with a way to access and analyze data in a more user-friendly format.

In the 1970s, the rise of the personal computer (PC) revolutionized the way companies collected, stored, and analyzed data. The PC made it possible for companies to collect and store data on a much larger scale, and new software programs were developed to help managers access and analyze this data. This was the beginning of the BI industry as we know it today.

One of the first companies to capitalize on this new technology was a small startup called Cognos. Founded in 1969, Cognos developed software that could be used to create reports and analyze data on a PC. This software was an instant success, and Cognos quickly became a leader in the BI industry.

As the BI industry continued to grow, other companies also began to develop software and tools to help businesses access and analyze their data. In the 1990s, companies like Business Objects and MicroStrategy introduced new tools that made it possible for businesses to create interactive dashboards and visualizations. This made it easier for managers to see patterns and trends in their data, which helped them make better decisions.

Today, the BI industry is a multi-billion dollar industry, with companies like SAP, Oracle, and IBM offering a wide range of tools and solutions to help businesses access and analyze their data. With the rise of big data and the Internet of Things (IoT), the BI industry is expected to continue to grow in the coming years, as more and more companies look to use data to gain a competitive edge.

Business Scorecard Metrics for a Law Firm - In business, a scorecard is a means of assessing the performance of an individual or a company. Scorecard metrics are the measurements used to track and control the progress of this performance. The intent of these measurements is to ensure that progress remains steady towards a desired future goal. Scorecard metrics should be specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-constrained (S.M.A.R.T.). Scorecards can most easily be likened to school report cards...

Manager's Responsibility for Scorecard Measures - When somebody has a measure assigned to them, and that measure goes bad, then it is the manager's responsibility, the manager of that person's responsibility to say, hey, I see you are struggling in that area, what is it that I can do to help you out? Instead of, what the hell did you do, this thing is red, okay. It's a whole different mindset. One organization I work with, they actually had a measurements group, and every month, all the department managers got into this room with their leaders, and there was this gentleman upfront that was fantastic in terms of performance measures, a very good guy, very technical. And he stands at the front, and he goes through the performance measures, and is like dah-dah-dah, you suck, that type of thing, right...

Methods For Creating A Scorecard - Methods for creating a scorecard have evolved many times since they became a popular BI tool. Today there are four main components to consider before creating one: A destination statement A strategic linkage model outlining how one plans to achieve said goals A definition for each goal A definition for each measurement Once these four elements have been carefully considered and laid out by management, one can begin creating a scorecard...

Proper Scorecard Design - First and foremost, to be a useful, a scorecard must contain the proper measures and targets. The ultimate goal of the scorecard's design is identifying a small number of business measures and coupling objectives with them. When they are referred to later on, it should be possible to conclude whether current performance is on track or not. Balanced scorecards have evolved many times since their initial inception. Today there are four main components to consider before creating one...

Self-Learning Analytics - Analytics is best accomplished with visualization dashboards. Even though almost all applications have some pre-built dashboards, embedded BI drastically improves the self-service flexibility of pre-built dashboards. It also empowers users with self-service analytic capabilities far beyond the pre-built dashboards. Embedded BI's largest user populations are business users with no BI expertise. The embedded BI therefore must be easily self-learnable for non-specialists. On the cautionary side, many other BI visualization tools are mixing in a story-telling visual infographs. That is great for a specialized analyst, but the increased complexity can hinder self-learning analytics...
