Central BI and Analytics Team - The central BI and analytics team has a lot of visibility into the different data sets people are using and how they are building their worksheets or dashboards because they are able to see what's popular, what's not, what maybe is coming from sanctioned sources versus we call more unsanctioned sources. They can keep a good eye on things. So it's enabling people to continue to explore their data in an unfettered manner, but also helps people to be able to get really good visibility into what data is being used to make decisions and standardizing data definitions and those things. And yeah that was the use case I wanted to highlight. We've have some other really fantastic partners playing in the space because it's one that's very hot right now. Holly: Well, it does speak to helping with self-service and both the agility of the pipeline that the metadata and helping people learn what's available...

Challenges of Big Data for BI - In terms of social networking people are trying to understand who are the main influencers in social networks in order to market to them. Then they want to know how effective those marketing campaigns are and whether or not those are the right influencers to target those other people in the social network, in other words to cause the ripple behavior across the social network and get more sales. In terms of sensor data, well I would say most definitely supply chain and distribution channel optimization is the are of focus...

Clean Up Marketing Leads with Our BI Tool - So how do I clean up marketing leads with our BI tool? With our data mashup tool and our visualization technology, I can quickly identify any exceptions or any outliers. We can quickly identify inconsistencies. It’s very common in the way you enter country names or state names and city names. I can quickly identify duplications and missing contact info. Are there any leads with no e-mail or no phone? And all this can be done behind the scenes where you can actually put in logic to flag certain things you want to look at and certain things you want to notice. One of the really cool features in this data write-back is doing data mashup, itself. So now I have all these leads, but I have leads where I have USA data in different forms. I can go ahead and manually change these, but I don’t want to do that. I want to have some quick find and replace mechanisms. So what I am going to do is export this out into Excel. Click on ok...

Cloud BI Service - Even in established organizations that have established on-premises systems they're looking at building a new cloud BI service and particularly around analytics often to take advantage of the data gravity. The gravity being that lots of the data already in the clouds. They want to move analytics to the cloud and take advantage of it, as I mentioned here, point technology using in database processing. You've got powerful platforms out there. Why not use them effectively for churning through analytics and even for data preparation, ETL kind of activities to support analytics. We see a lot of trending towards that being able to use the parallel processing and more powerful platforms in the cloud for this. Then the other thing to mention about Cloud of courses is it's not one Cloud but many Clouds and multi-cloud. We see most organizations are using the big ones: Amazon, Microsoft, Google, but certainly even others, multi-clouds sometimes. It just works out that way that they're moved into the Cloud in different parts of the organization, moved to different Cloud systems, or it's by design because they want to avoid vendor lock-in and platform lock-in and have some flexibility there. This is certainly a feature of the Cloud these days that it isn't necessity of having analytics. It will be portable and going to solutions that can support multiple different clouds so not just one, but certainly the big ones out there if not others as they come along. Take advantage of the Cloud infrastructure...

Cloud BI Tool - What is it that business users can do in the spreadsheet that they potentially cannot do in your desktop BI tool or cloud BI tool that you provide? Find out, and then you need to make some hard decisions. You don’t really want to limit them. What is it that a BI tool needs to have to basically close all the gaps in functionality, between their features and what Excel. Empower your business users with their own sandboxes. Then empower them with capabilities to share their content with their colleagues with as little involvement from IT as possible, and then empower yourself. Empower your BI support organization with the ability to monitor what these people do, and selectively, proactively and reactively promote that content to production. I would say you notice a user who has created at web-based BI application that loads billions of rows from ten different data sources, creates a giant in memory data mart, and distributes it via email to hundreds of his colleagues. That’s a big success, right. All this needs to be productionalized or operationalized...

Collaborative BI - This world has been connected. BI systems are no different. The goal of collaborative BI is to facilitate quick decision making. The shift to a better form of collaborative BI is happening. The ability to access BI applications from mobile devices has ushered in an entirely new era of data accessibility, and yet, the large majority of collaborative BI decisions are handled through email.InetSoft seeks to change that. With it's 11.4 release of Style Intelligence, InetSoft brings users the ability to share bookmarks and annotations directly through their dashboards...

Collaborative BI Demo - So first I’ll give you a bit of background on what motivates our product development and our marketing aims, as well. It is the kind of things that you’re familiar with, how the original BI solutions, going back at decade or more, much of them still suffer from this legacy issue. We are a business intelligence vendor that’s brought in good solutions for the kind of problems that BI applications have had in the past. We’re taking on the inflexibility side of things, access to different data sources. A lot of BI platforms require a data warehouse investment, and while we are compatible with those kind of environments, we also are very nimble and able to connect different data sources. That provides an infrastructure that is able to adapt to different changing requirements. This is agile BI. Any business is always changing what they care about looking at...

Compare the Traditional BI Approach with Agile BI - We’re going to talk about the traditional waterfall approach in detail and contrast that and compare that with the agile and scrum approaches and really dive in deep from that perspective. Let’s think about the way that tools work in our BI methodologies and how we have deliver things historically. We go through these different phases, and we have to build different components of the solution. If we think about the people and the processes that the traditional waterfall methods entail, what we end up doing is creating a lot of our requirements either in Word or Excel and doing a lot of data entry, and then we go to the analyst. In the analysis phase we may do the same thing, and so we do a lot of redundant work. We do a lot of Excel work and do our maps, and we build it to a data modeling tool and rekey again. There is a lot of interpretation and discussion and paper passing back and forth and as we begin to deploy the solution through the different phases and build the different components. What we have is a lot of non-value added labor, and it’s very inefficient, and it’s very time consuming and it’s a very error problem...

Compare Traditional BI Versus Future BI - Now let’s compare traditional BI versus future BI. BI has always been something that’s had a steep learning curve. It’s certainly gotten better over the years as the BI vendors have made their tools a little bit easier to get results faster. But there is a learning curve, and IT has to run the show because it’s about the data access, access to the data stores that must be carefully managed. As I mentioned before we’re moving from an age of the data getting in, to more of the data getting out. And so there is a new kind of balance that’s needs to be achieved there. Future BI would increase self-service BI, put more technology in the hands of users to personalize their experience with access and analytics. Moving again from static reports, limited data visualization options to tools that really are focused on the idea of graphical data visualization had much more data interactivity without having to involve IT. No they can drill down into information, and I think these are the kinds of the things that non-technical users need. They need the graphical ability because obviously many users, particularly when they have to make quick operational decisions can respond more effectively to charge, to dashboard kind of information...
