Better Tools for Delivering Data or Accessing Data - Ladies and gentleman, hello and welcome out there everybody. It’s DM Radio. My name is Eric Kavanagh, and I will be your humble if excitable host for the show that is designed after all to peel away the marketing veneer so we can get down to brass tacks and hopefully get a better hand for what is going on in the field of information management. And there is plenty going on obviously. It is the Information Age. And the topic for today really deals with some old problems but some new problems as well. Of course, we are always talking about moving data around one way or another. And the topic for today is avoiding bottlenecks and hurdles in data delivery. And we also have one of my best friends in the business, Philip Russom of TDWI, who is going to be talking to us in just about one minute. And we use a (#) Hashtag @DMRadio. Folks, thanks so much for all the tweets already. We do appreciate that, getting the word out there. And feel free to send your questions there, you can also send your questions to me at dmradio@sourcemedia.com, but without further ado, let’s bring in Jim Ericson, our Editorial Director and Co-host. Better Understanding of Master Data Management - Today’s Webinar is going to help us to gain a better understanding of master data management, abbreviated as MDM. We’ll talk a bit more about what it is, the current state of the data management industry as well as the adoption levels of this toolset today, key trends and a bit of advice for the future. It's really interesting to hear how experts talk about MDM. Some of the words that they use get across the business benefits of MDM. One thing that we’ve heard a lot is that there is a lot of confusion around MDM. Certainly some of it is perpetuated by vendors, I know. But there are different definitions floating around which doesn’t help people warm to the discipline. Let’s start with the perspective of the business. What is the CEO or a CFO going to see as the value of MDM. I think it's about getting consistent data and information. If there’s any application or project that they want to get off the ground, a key to achieving those strategic objectives, invariably it's going to require good quality, good clean data. And if the data stinks as happens in a lot of these large global corporations that have fragmented systems distributed around the organization, initiatives are not going to succeed. So MDM is about making great systems not just for reporting and analysis, which is what they have focused on, but for all applications as a point of contact with the customer specifically...

BI Platform for Big Data - Let’s move ahead. This is definitely a BI platform that’s built to scale for big data and large volumes of users. It's built on the concept of using this commodity servers and scaling up with clusters and nodes. That’s in contrast to other BI solutions that require heavy duty data appliances and or even huge memory capable servers. So that’s the quick overview of the BI application. Here I just wanted to highlight some of the features that are collaboration specific, and we’re going to show them as well. But being a server based solution from the beginning, that contrast with some of the desktop applications like Tableau. When everything is saved on the server, it’s just inherently sharable. Here’s a list of other historical collaboration features, the things that people reuse. These are bunch of InetSoft terms here, but you’ll see them an action in the demo. Data blocks are queries that you create in a drag-and-drop environment. The pull together different bits of data that you want to use and a dashboard or report. Worksheets are the canvas to combine those different data blocks into full data set using data mash up. With the data mashup, you can use it to create dashboards and reports in a viewsheet. It is our terminology for a dashboard of visualization that you create in the drag-and-drop design environment...

Big Data Analytics in the Banking Market - Every day, we produce huge amounts of data. Whether it is a web page we open or a transaction we make, all of these actions sum up into 2.5 quintillion bytes of data daily. Logically, such huge amounts of invaluable information can be analyzed to come to all kinds of conclusions that will be helpful in almost any industry, including the banking market. Importance of Big Data Analytics Big data analytics has numerous benefits specifically for banks. Big data analytics can give insights into many aspects of a person's life including their needs, preferences, and lifestyle. This allows banks to personalize their services to meet the needs of every individual. Moreover, big data analytics can also improve the extrapolative power of risk models that financial institutions and banks use. But this is not all. Some other benefits of big data include: A Full View On Your Business: By getting such crucial information like customer behavior patterns and internal process efficiency, you can get a full picture of what your business is and how and where it can be improved. Big Data Analytics Solution for Cities - More than a buzzword for cities, Big Data is the term that describes the endless amounts of data created every day by a city's citizens, agencies, organizations, businesses, sensors, and machines. Understandably a city can struggle to reap the value of all this data. Without specially-trained staff or the latest analytic tools, it can be hard to easily understand the trends, patterns or relationships inside the data. The value of Big Data is realized when information is extracted from the myriad sources, combined, and interpreted to uncover insights that lead to actions that make a difference in addressing the challenges facing our cities. Cities are complex, dynamic structures. With so many moving parts, they are challenging to predict. Yet, administrations are charged with managing the infrastructure and services with a goal of building a prosperous, resilient city. One challenge is coping with contrasting areas of expansion and decline along with a diverse and changing populations. In terms of services affecting their economy, health, transportation and education are the essential services that affect anyone who lives, works, or travels in the city. All of these things are interconnected - which makes the analysis and the choice of actions more complex...

Big Data Analytics - The term Big Data usually implies a data source that has grown too large to be used with regular database tools. In the past 20 years, sheer amounts of data collected have been growing at an astonishing rate. In the past 5 years, the decrease in database storage costs has enabled more companies to use Big Data sources...

Big Data Analytics Podcast - There has been a lot of talk this year about the wonderful world of big data and big data analytics. What is driving big data today? When we talk about big data, we’re often talking about volumes of data, and what is driving that tremendous increase in volume. I’ve heard people call it tsunami of data that is now. Things that are driving that volume are a lot of new channels or new sources of data coming into the enterprise. This includes digital data, data like click stream traffic, things like mobile applications. It also includes a lot of sensor data that is coming off our vehicles or coming off of production lines. All of these news sources of data are generating not only large volumes of data. To be honest database companies have solved the issue of large volumes of data for some time now. What we’re talking about now is how do we solve some of the new challenges around big data analytics. That includes both being able to take in these news sources of data, which are not well structured...

Big Data Becomes Fast and Approachable - So what are the top 10 trends we expect to see this year around Big Data? That's what we will get into now. So, the first trend that we will go through is, Big Data becomes fast and approachable. Options expand to speed up Hadoop, and I'll hand things over to Larry to first give us some commentary on this one. Larry Chiang: Thanks Abhishek, Hi everyone, so this is essentially a two part trend. The first, it is all about why Big Data has become fast and approachable right, and it all has to do with, how users have been perceiving Big Data. To give you some context, when Hadoop was invented by the folks at Yahoo the original goal was to index the internet. It was designed to be used as a batch processing engine, but you know as it evolved, people realized the power of scaled out storage, the power of processing and clustered workload management, and they forget, you know, it did make a great data analysis platform. So they started adding components that allow data to be stored and queried using common SQL tools in response to a lot of that demand...

Big Data Challenges - Solving Big data challenges is a great problem to have. When a business is confronted with corralling a massive amount of information, it means that they are encountering huge success. But like any enduring relationship, big businesses and big data do not always function together harmoniously. Right now businesses interested in employing BI to their strategy are coming up against unique data challenges posed by their great success. Now, in a scientific or engineering sense, big data can be looked at as all the information flying across the internet at any one time. Data scientists are often talking about tera- zeta- and peta-bytes, which are hundreds of millions and billions of bits of information in all file types-- from video clips, images, music, to live streaming and a whole lot more. While it is not impossible for a business to engage this type of big data, the kind of information businesses are interested in usually...

Big Data - Hadoop or Data Warehouses? - Well I think we should start with the definition what is big data. First off, there has always been big data in business, but now it’s getting a little more attention. Big data is any dataset, any one single repository of data that exceeds the capability of most analytic tools to use it. In other words it gets beyond the common business intelligence tool sets, beyond the analysis software solutions that we are all familiar with and are popular. Another way of saying it is whatever this BI tool is that we have, this big data will break it. This big data makes it hard to use that reporting tool successfully. And usually you see that in very slow response times. You try to use a data query tool, and it takes 18 hours instead of 30 minutes. That is certainly something that slows you down and makes your life difficult. Where does big data come from? Where do you see big data? Well, certainly over the years it began in the historical times, and if we look back just 10 or 20 years, and it was really all the transaction details and the call detail records. And still these applications are producing huge datasets and huge amounts of data for some of our clients...

Big Data Has Been Around - If Big Data in a way has been around for a long time, why is it such a hot topic now? Well, it’s part of the emerging technology research that we are doing now, and it's really showing a cycle. The cycle is the business demands to do something more quickly and cheaply. They want to deal with all of this information and get some value out of it. And there will be technologies that allow you to do that, but probably they aren’t as affordable as they could be, and that will go on for a long time. So predictive analytics has been doing it for a long time. Massively parallel processing has been around for long time. All of these things have been around. But something will come along that makes it cheaper, and all of a sudden somebody will take advantage of that being cheaper and do something really cool. It began with Google doing their implementation and big table and all those things. Then Yahoo and Facebook and those other organizations came together and used Apache in doing the Hadoop implementation. These things slowly built on one another. Eventually, this will catch on and lot of vendors will get involved...

Big Data Technologies to Improve a Company's Performance - So when you talk about what is the opportunity for big data technologies to improve a company’s performance, and what we don’t see organizations doing much of, yet, what you might call the next frontier, is not just analyze the transactions that happen from those interactions online but get a better sense of customer behavior and customer interactions that precede a transaction. The state of the art for most marketing teams today is looking at last click attribution. Whatever Web page you were on right before making a product purchase, that Web page gets a hundred percent of the credit for the marketing campaign measurement for driving that transaction. We know that is just not true. Most consumers, no matter what they’re buying, whether they’re buying a pair of shows, a new pair of pants, it’s going to take them six to eight different touches from an organization before they make a purchasing decision. So getting smarter about how we not only get visibility into consumer behavior, but how we actually quantify what impact interactions have had with the consumer before is really important to bringing the science of data into the art of marketing...
