Demo of Interactive Visual Analysis - Let’s continue with this demo of interactive visual analysis. Next, I’ll multi-select slot hold with a gross profit and revenue and select Insert Metric. I’ll choose the slot hold divided by the slot coined in to get my profit margin, and I’ll put this metric in the size-by. The bubble size now reflects the respective profit margins. We can see that Machine 29 has revenue that’s comparable to most other machines, but it has an abysmal profit margin. Let’s investigate this further. I’ll drag slot machine amount to the Y-axis and dragging this out reveals that many of the slot machines have similar payouts except for my outlier Machine 289. Clearly, this machine has had too many jackpots and as a result is making almost no profit, less than a penny per dollar. And now pretty quickly I’ve been able to discover why the $100 slot machines are underperforming. Again, I’ll keep my current view and duplicate it. I’ll rename the scatter plot to $100 slots, and then I’ll go ahead and change the copy I just created to a heat map. A heat map is a contribution analysis data visualization similar to a pie chart but very useful when there are many items in consideration. Here you can clearly see that the size of each box shows a contribution of the $100 slot machines to the total of jackpot and that the 289 Machine is paying off nearly a quarter of that amount...

Demonstration of How to Analyze Drug Uptake Data - Continuing our demonstration of how to analyze drug uptake data, we can start to organize this particular view to understand are there particular states where this injectable has been used more frequently than others? So we can organize the 339 hospitals and see how much penetration is taking place at that statewide level to really consider how we may want to send out our teams and our account managers to be able to partner with other competitive hospitals in the area to support the uptake of that drug. It is very nice to not only know where the injectable is actually being utilized, but also to know where the injectable is not being utilized and how that might inform your strategy going forward. As a brief recap here, there are a couple of different ways to actually think about tackling the ability to look at a drug uptake and an analysis around that. The first is you can think about searching by relevant medical claims, by NDC code about something that's important to you. The other thing you can do is you can actually think about linking medical diagnosis from the claims to the injection data to actually give you the opportunity to think about what diagnoses are related to what injectables, and find out do those kind of multiple diagnoses actually influence what your strategy looks like...

Defining Data Science Relative To Analytics - Thank you all for joining us today. I'm Abhishek Gupta, I am the Chief Data Scientist at InetSoft. We have four major points that we want to discuss today. The first one being the importance of data science and data scientists and bringing machine learning into organizations. The second one being we've all heard of the V's of big data, and we know that one is velocity, and we know that there's a lot of streaming data out there now. I feel like that's going to be a big part of organizational strategies moving forward. Point three, how an organization can keep creativity with machine learning. We have all of these different tools to choose from today, all of this different data, but we deal with regulation. We deal with documentation. We deal with productionizaling machine learning code. How do we keep infusing creativity into the machine learning workflow within an organization. Then, we've also heard a lot about the citizen data scientist recently, and just in general more and more people in organizations wanting to get involve with analytics and machine learning. So that's point four. Okay, so we're going to start our discussion here, is any of this really new? Is machine learning new? Is data science new? To me this is resounding no. In fact, machine learning has been studied at least since the 1950s, maybe before. Data science you could say goes back to John Tukey's 1962 Future of Data Analysis Paper. Deploying Flash Dashboard Software in Enterprises - I have another question. Are you finding that there is a growing pushback in the use of Flash in corporations? Are there obstacles to deploying Flash dashboard software in enterprises? Byron Igoe (BI): No, the only pushback we have heard, and we do have a way to address it, is in organizations that are adopting the iPad, because Apple and Adobe are still having their little tiff. And we actually do have on our roadmap for Version 11.1, due out mid-year, an iPad compatible viewer for the interactive dashboards, so it is basically all HTML5 instead of Flash while still allowing for filtering and zooming on the chart etc. Question: But maybe what you’re seeing is due to self-selection? You don’t hear from company who prohibit plug-ins and downloads? BI: Maybe, but I don’t think that’s the case. Difference Between a Singular Measure and an Analytic Measure - The difference between a singular measure and an analytic measure is singular measures tend to be easier to manipulate and cheat on. Sales in dollars is a singular measure. The chance of you having a single measure tell you what you really need to know is very slim because most aspects of performance are fairly complicated. You might need multiple measures to track them. So analytic or index measures are harder to manipulate. They are more likely to give you a real view of what’s going on, and it still allows you to have a few key metrics because you start out with a few key summary gauges at the top, and then if those are yellow or red, then you can drill down and look into the details of what’s underneath it. Some personal examples of analytic metrics that we’re familiar with is we all know something about our credit score. They are all different. It’s a place where all BAs can grow and mature their profession. It’s a place to access the tools and information of a competency development framework and methodology. Evolution from Information Publishing to Insight Discovery and Analytics - Today we are going to talk about where business intelligence has evolved from information publishing to insight discovery and analytics. One example of published information is the old-fashioned paper report. A more modern example is the Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. There’s nothing wrong with Excel, per se, but there are problems to watch out for. People tend to over rely on it to analyze data, transform it, and then share their findings with other people. And they do this, instead of using a BI application, because the Excel interface is so familiar. That’s an element of it. But it’s the easiest path to address the problems is coming through Excel because the problems are not necessarily retrieval, they’re assembly. You need two reports to get the information together from two different sources. The simple construction of one report that builds both sets of information is extraordinarily complex. You need to be able to integrate things. You need to be able to drive some data, add some formulas, do some other things, model. And then there are other pieces of it. You interact with the data. You look at it. You spin it around a little bit. You change it. You add. You remove. You subset, and then you share it with others. This is the storytelling component which involves charts, and graphs, as well as another model which is encapsulated in the spreadsheet...
