Demand for Analytics Tools - And as a result we are seeing that there's a lot of demand for analytics tools and specifically features within platforms that allow users to seamlessly connect to and combine a wide variety of IOT data sources, both in the cloud and on premise. So yes, I would say the trend is how does the IOT better enable people to see and understand their own data, and I would say there's been a lot of traction, but there's still some way to go. Abhishek: Holly, I agree with your thoughts on this. I know you, yourself, are a big user of IOT technologies to perfect your meat grilling and cooking times with the applicability both in your home life and with what we see with your customers. Holly: Yes, I did connect my bake oven to this and that. So it's again more data. Bring it on, and it's really a huge opportunity. The difference about a lot of this data from the traditional data is, its new data. I am mixing interesting new data from internet of things...

Demo of Interactive Visual Analysis - Let’s continue with this demo of interactive visual analysis. Next, I’ll multi-select slot hold with a gross profit and revenue and select Insert Metric. I’ll choose the slot hold divided by the slot coined in to get my profit margin, and I’ll put this metric in the size-by. The bubble size now reflects the respective profit margins. We can see that Machine 29 has revenue that’s comparable to most other machines, but it has an abysmal profit margin. Let’s investigate this further. I’ll drag slot machine amount to the Y-axis and dragging this out reveals that many of the slot machines have similar payouts except for my outlier Machine 289. Clearly, this machine has had too many jackpots and as a result is making almost no profit, less than a penny per dollar. And now pretty quickly I’ve been able to discover why the $100 slot machines are underperforming. Again, I’ll keep my current view and duplicate it. I’ll rename the scatter plot to $100 slots, and then I’ll go ahead and change the copy I just created to a heat map. A heat map is a contribution analysis data visualization similar to a pie chart but very useful when there are many items in consideration. Here you can clearly see that the size of each box shows a contribution of the $100 slot machines to the total of jackpot and that the 289 Machine is paying off nearly a quarter of that amount...

Demonstration of How to Analyze Drug Uptake Data - Continuing our demonstration of how to analyze drug uptake data, we can start to organize this particular view to understand are there particular states where this injectable has been used more frequently than others? So we can organize the 339 hospitals and see how much penetration is taking place at that statewide level to really consider how we may want to send out our teams and our account managers to be able to partner with other competitive hospitals in the area to support the uptake of that drug. It is very nice to not only know where the injectable is actually being utilized, but also to know where the injectable is not being utilized and how that might inform your strategy going forward. As a brief recap here, there are a couple of different ways to actually think about tackling the ability to look at a drug uptake and an analysis around that. The first is you can think about searching by relevant medical claims, by NDC code about something that's important to you. The other thing you can do is you can actually think about linking medical diagnosis from the claims to the injection data to actually give you the opportunity to think about what diagnoses are related to what injectables, and find out do those kind of multiple diagnoses actually influence what your strategy looks like...

Defining Data Science Relative To Analytics - Thank you all for joining us today. I'm Abhishek Gupta, I am the Chief Data Scientist at InetSoft. We have four major points that we want to discuss today. The first one being the importance of data science and data scientists and bringing machine learning into organizations. The second one being we've all heard of the V's of big data, and we know that one is velocity, and we know that there's a lot of streaming data out there now. I feel like that's going to be a big part of organizational strategies moving forward. Point three, how an organization can keep creativity with machine learning. We have all of these different tools to choose from today, all of this different data, but we deal with regulation. We deal with documentation. We deal with productionizaling machine learning code. How do we keep infusing creativity into the machine learning workflow within an organization. Then, we've also heard a lot about the citizen data scientist recently, and just in general more and more people in organizations wanting to get involve with analytics and machine learning. So that's point four. Okay, so we're going to start our discussion here, is any of this really new? Is machine learning new? Is data science new? To me this is resounding no. In fact, machine learning has been studied at least since the 1950s, maybe before. Data science you could say goes back to John Tukey's 1962 Future of Data Analysis Paper. There's a great recent paper by Donoho out of Stanford that talks about 50 years of history of data science, and I urge you to read that...

Deploying Flash Dashboard Software in Enterprises - I have another question. Are you finding that there is a growing pushback in the use of Flash in corporations? Are there obstacles to deploying Flash dashboard software in enterprises? Byron Igoe (BI): No, the only pushback we have heard, and we do have a way to address it, is in organizations that are adopting the iPad, because Apple and Adobe are still having their little tiff. And we actually do have on our roadmap for Version 11.1, due out mid-year, an iPad compatible viewer for the interactive dashboards, so it is basically all HTML5 instead of Flash while still allowing for filtering and zooming on the chart etc. Question: But maybe what you’re seeing is due to self-selection? You don’t hear from company who prohibit plug-ins and downloads? BI: Maybe, but I don’t think that’s the case. I mean historically, the biggest problem with the use of Flash has been among government organizations...

Descriptive Analytics Examples - The next way both employees and leaders use data to transform the way their business is: 2. Increased Operational Efficiency and Asset Utilization One major part of analytics made possible with business intelligence is descriptive analytics. "Simply explained, descriptive analytics evaluates business data and converts it into something decision makers can understand and base their actions on," says Kwon Mullens, a business researcher at Supreme Dissertations. "Simple examples of descriptive analytics reports are sales, customer, and operations reports." By analyzing these reports with business intelligence tools, logistics, warehouse, and asset managers can access the context they need to improve their decisions. For example, a logistics manager can view and monitor key performance indicators in an interactive supply chain dashboard to identify issues and make corresponding decisions quickly...

Difference Between a Singular Measure and an Analytic Measure - The difference between a singular measure and an analytic measure is singular measures tend to be easier to manipulate and cheat on. Sales in dollars is a singular measure. The chance of you having a single measure tell you what you really need to know is very slim because most aspects of performance are fairly complicated. You might need multiple measures to track them. So analytic or index measures are harder to manipulate. They are more likely to give you a real view of what’s going on, and it still allows you to have a few key metrics because you start out with a few key summary gauges at the top, and then if those are yellow or red, then you can drill down and look into the details of what’s underneath it. Some personal examples of analytic metrics that we’re familiar with is we all know something about our credit score. Most of us have no idea what the exact formula is but we know that it’s some number 400 and 800 and that the bankers use this as a way of measuring the amount of risk in giving someone a loan, and we know that certain things cause it to go up and down...

Different Ways to Analyze Data - We are living in a time of ubiquitous data. These days, you can't run a business without some knowledge and understanding of data analysis. From global multinationals to small businesses, every kind of organization has data that at a minimum needs to be monitored, and in many cases analyzed thoroughly, to ensure that affairs are managed properly. Having the knowledge of how to properly analyze and glean insights from your organization's data is more important than ever, and can make or break you relative to competitors...

Different Use Cases of Analytics - Enterprises have different use cases of analytics. Analytics has become an absolute expectation in the business across every organization. The people who are driving analytics are very knowledgeable. They have their own webinars, and everyone joins to hear the next best use case that’s available to them around this data. So it’s absolutely making a huge impact. How do you enable a real time enterprise that simultaneously analyzes, acts and transacts at the same time? That is the only way for you to be successful in this new generation of Big Data. An absolute pre-requisite is the real time data platform. What I mean by real time data platform is that until today the technologies that have typically supported the transactional storage and data warehousing have been distinct and separate. They have each been optimized for the particular niche and nicely separated, very nicely in their star schemas by the different teams responsible for these different applications. But looking into the future we now see a new possibility that the real time data platform can serve both. I’ve read recently that over a fourth of organizations are now beginning to bring analytics and transactions together, and this is going to be absolutely critical to be successful...

Dive into Business Intelligence Reporting and Analysis - So now we’re going to dive into business intelligence reporting and analysis, monitoring and prediction. Back in the 70s and 80s, all BI was low business value and fairly low complexity, but over time we’ve added other capabilities, so now that business intelligence can provide significant business value. We can put monitoring analysis and reporting into a single solution, and we call it performance dashboarding. This is not just a flat display of what’s performing well and what’s not. It’s a multi layered delivery system that really is the new face of BI. An offshoot of a performance dashboard is predictive analytics. These are the more advanced analytical models and visualization techniques that provide exceptional value. Another area is the planning system. You use the results of your analysis either through your dashboard or your analytical tools to create your plan, your budgets, your models, and your forecasts. In those plans you’re going to set goals, targets and thresholds and those get pushed into your monitoring layer of your dashboard which allows you to monitor your progress towards achieving strategic objectives, executing strategies. This is called scorecard reporting...

eCommerce Bounce Rate as an Analytics Metric - Though it is largely true that eCommerce technology is turning out to be a commodity, there are still websites that do not work well. What if a customer clicked a link and reached your website? What if your website crashed, presented the user with broken images or error messages? If that happens, you are not giving the customer any choice except to leave. It is not just about crashed websites and broken images. Now that the customer has many choices, even a slow-loading eCommerce website is enough to make customers leave without giving it a second chance. Let me tell you about my online shopping process -- I often open multiple competing websites in different tabs on my browser. If one of them is taking too long to load, I have already engaged with another...

Effectively Present Analytics Data - Presenting web analytics data to executives who have little or no experience data digging themselves can be a challenge for any analyst. There are dozens of metrics in your analytics account- page views, time on a site, unique visitors, cost per click, bounce rate, conversions-the list is endless. Reports containing all of these metrics are not only confusing but completely worthless. Some metrics in your analytics account will speak loudly to your online marketing team but will mean little to nothing to your CEO. When you communicate with the Big Guns you need to use persuasive presentation skills to make your arguments loud and clear...

Empowering Individuals with Self-service Analytics - How do we in organizations empower all of our individuals with self-service analytics? The trends behind this, we all know them, are around mobile and cloud and social and Big Data and how do we leverage those trends and optimize the opportunity to take us to the next level in our business. We look at research often to figure out where is the market is going. What do we need, and what do our customers need in order to take them not only to the next level today but how to deliver innovations for tomorrow. And I want to ask each and every one of you, are you harnessing the opportunity that Big Data has to offer, or the data that is available to you in your organization? Have you figured out what is the biggest challenge for you when it comes to getting the right information that you need? Is it volume? Is it velocity? Is it variety? How can you take advantage of the information that you’ve never taken advantage of before to figure out the right innovation and to really change your business? The reality is that companies are not doing that. The majority of companies are still relying on historical information, on established KPI’s that are in financial documentation. They are really not relying on unique information...

Energy Companies Use Analytics - Learning how to generate fire followed by agriculture, lastly industrial revolution & domination by fossil fuels are some instances that enabled the early men to apprehend the notion of energy. Starting from that era to the contemporary one, we have tapped into the resources of both renewable & non-renewable energy sources like solar, wind, oil, hydraulic, gas. As a matter of fact our energy systems in the current times are more flexible, progressive and digital. Energy Industry Analytics Software Usage - Analytics in the energy industry refers to all the processes that are involved in gathering electrical data. This also consists of the use of software for assisting the energy suppliers in the analysis, supervision, and optimization of energy-related KPIs. Some of the common energy KPIs are production distribution, production costs, consumption, etc. An energy dashboard refers to a reporting tool used to monitor the KPIs of the energy in real-time while using an interactive interface. It is beneficial for energy suppliers as it helps them cover the market demands that are always changing, and also analyzes and optimizes the cost of production, which will lead to an increase in overall profitability. While different types of energy powers the industry, our everyday lives, and businesses. Essential to Be a Successful Business Analyst - And another audience member agrees with us. The next question is, ‘is the BA course like CBAP essential to be a successful business analyst?’ I don’t know how to answer that question. There are a lot of different options. They are all different. I am not sure that it ties right in with the trend, but in my experience we see business analysts role be the subject matter experts on the business side of the house where they grew up as helping the IT subject-matter experts on the Information Technology side of the house. Once they graduate from there they have demonstrated a high degree of expertise. Again there are some risks in that. I am starting to see business analysts emerge from colleges, believe it or not. I met a group of individuals not too long ago who said they grew up wanting to be business analysts, and they studied in college for it, and here they are. What about the business analyst being offshore? What is the trend there? Business analysts being offshore is a little bit difficult. I have seen it, but I can’t say that I have seen any great successes. I think BAs being offshore is a dangerous thing I think it’s really imperative that outsource vendors who are going to offer this a BA should be on the ground working with customers...

Evaluate Business Analysis Practices - Competitors are starting to evaluate business analysis practices and some of the output of those practices it is to create a Center of Excellence. It’s a place where all BAs can grow and mature their profession. It’s a place to access the tools and information of a competency development framework and methodology. A Center of Excellence is not a simply a SharePoint portal and a dumping ground for all kind of information. When I talk about a Center of Excellence, I am looking at an owner. I am looking at a director level type of individuals sitting at Center of Excellence. We’re talking about establishing standards and practices in collaboration with other disciplines within an organization including software development and quality assurance and project management, and supply chain, however your organization is built. We are looking at a strategic type of organization again giving an opportunity to business analysts who, when they grow up, are the strategic analysts within an organization. So, it is becoming very prevalent not just in North America and not just in India, I am seeing it happen in Europe. I am seeing it happen in Japan and Australia. All over the world we’re starting to see COEs, and I think this has been the year that it really has come to life...

Evolution from Information Publishing to Insight Discovery and Analytics - Today we are going to talk about where business intelligence has evolved from information publishing to insight discovery and analytics. One example of published information is the old-fashioned paper report. A more modern example is the Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. There’s nothing wrong with Excel, per se, but there are problems to watch out for. People tend to over rely on it to analyze data, transform it, and then share their findings with other people. And they do this, instead of using a BI application, because the Excel interface is so familiar. That’s an element of it. But it’s the easiest path to address the problems is coming through Excel because the problems are not necessarily retrieval, they’re assembly. You need two reports to get the information together from two different sources. The simple construction of one report that builds both sets of information is extraordinarily complex. You need to be able to integrate things. You need to be able to drive some data, add some formulas, do some other things, model. And then there are other pieces of it. You interact with the data. You look at it. You spin it around a little bit. You change it. You add. You remove. You subset, and then you share it with others. This is the storytelling component which involves charts, and graphs, as well as another model which is encapsulated in the spreadsheet...
