Integrating ERP and Business Intelligence - In the last few years we have seen Oracle acquire Hyperion and SELinux and IBM acquire Cognos and SAP acquire Business Objects and Outlooksoft. Clearly those firms think there is value in the integration. I would like to talk a little bit about the benefits to be gained by better linking ERP and Business Intelligence, and why ERP vendors are acquiring the BI vendors the value in such integration. Let’s start off right away with Oracle and SAP: the two largest ERP vendors. They realized that BI solutions can help companies unlock the value of the data within ERP systems. ERP’s value has traditionally been in the standardization of business processes and providing a transaction audit trail and helping companies comply with regulatory requirements. ERP was considered necessary infrastructure. BI, Business intelligence or reporting and analytics can integrate, manipulate and present sets of data contained within these systems...

Intelligence on Customer Behavior in Retail - Here are some ways in which Starbucks uses business intelligence data to predict and impact customer behavior: Menu optimization. Starbucks is known to align its menu with the target audience's preferences. For example, they make product decisions after analyzing data on sales from specific stores and areas Personalization of customer experience. The company's analysts keep a long of transactions that customers made in the Starbucks Rewards app and then analyze it to tailor the loyalty program to every user using predictive analytics (a customer who likes to drink a large black coffee in the morning is given an opportunity to get the second one for half price rather than a free latte, for example). Targeted marketing. By studying digital marketing trends, customer preferences, purchase history, and the activity within the app, Starbucks analysts suggest new products, generate ideas for more enticing offers, and other marketing strategy improvements to maximize engagement. So the main takeaway here is that using business intelligence and customer relationship management tools to analyze customer data can make a lot of difference by revealing people's ever-changing preferences, interests, and behavior...

Interconnected Business Intelligence Projects - We all know that business intelligence consists of a series of interconnected projects. Basically it’s a program made of interconnected, interrelated projects, and that means that documentation is mandatory, you have to have that documentation carry forward from project to project to project. Also the good news is you are going to be generating lots of technical metadata, out of your ETL processing, your data quality processing, data modeling and so forth. And all of that information is very, very useful to the next project coming on board. You will also need business metadata, and this is the type of documentation that sometimes gets a little bit short shrift in a BI project. What do I mean by business metadata, I am talking about the information about let’s say business aliases or business rules, maybe even security constraints and so forth. All of the information that is critical to the business users to understand what exactly are they getting themselves into...

Introduction to Data Visualization in Business Intelligence - Data visualization, according to Wikipedia, is the study of the visual representation of data. A closely related term, Information visualization, is defined as: visualization is a process of transforming information into a visual form enabling the viewer to observe, browse, make sense, and understand the information. In the context of Business Intelligence (BI), data visualization is applied in two ways. First, data visualization is a discipline that covers a complete theory of how to visually represent data. The concepts and systems can be applied in the design of visual interfaces for communicating information. Secondly, data visualization concepts and guidelines are realized through features in BI software, which makes it easy to apply the concepts. This is similar to the concept of Object Oriented programming. Object Oriented Programming is a concept that could be implemented in any programming language, such as C. But to do it effectively and in large scale, it’s best to have a programming language that provides direct support for the concepts, in the form of classes and inheritance...

Is Python Good for Business Intelligence? - Yes, if you are already proficient with Python, a developer can use it to build connections to data sources, extract data, and render dashboards and reports. However, there are many free and commercially available tools that already perform all these functions with no hand coding. If you do want to try your Python skills in BI, you can leverage the libraries that come with it. They are NumPy, Pandas, Matplotlib, and SciPy. Additionally, libraries such as Seaborn and Plotly can be used to create more advanced visualizations. To extract data from different sources such as databases or APIs, libraries like sqlalchemy and requests can be used. To perform statistical analysis and modeling, libraries like statsmodels and scipy can be used. It is also possible to use Python to automate repetitive tasks or build scripts for data scraping, cleaning, and analysis. It's also possible to use python to run machine learning algorithm to create predictive model and also to use it as a reporting tool with libraries like matplotlib, bokeh, pygal...

Is Quick Business Intelligence Better Business Intelligence? - Today we are talking about “Is Quick Business Intelligence Better Business Intelligence?” And you may notice that I have taken the liberty to add a small question mark to the end of that title which is not in the original, and the reason I have done that will become clear as we go through the presentation. So let’s get moving. So we are talking about the old BI conundrum, quicker or better, and that’s the source of the question mark. If you look at the world today, quicker and quicker and quicker seems to be the thing that is most interesting to people, and it's all about the business immediacy. It's all about getting action done. It's about short term goals. It's as if we are running on a stop watch. And the way that that’s typically been done over the years has been through the use of data marts, with typically independent data marts. They are data marts, separate from the data warehouse or appliances. And that still continues today, and it is a very effective way of continuing today...

IT as the Enabler of Self-Service BI - IT certainly plays a critical role in this stuff, especially in making sure the data is accurate, is trusted, is getting to the right place at the right time, but is this mashup technology a good opportunity. I think especially with cloud computing being so prominent on everyone’s radar, I think that for years we have been asking the wrong question. We’ve been asking how can we align IT with the business, and we have COSO and IDLE and all these methodologies, and I think someone mentioned about self-service business intelligence. I see IT as the enabler of self-service. So you have software as a service. I think you mentioned that, Eric. You also have platform as a service, infrastructure as a service, so IT becomes an enabler of self-service. It becomes a provisioned. What does it provision? It provisions networks, storage of data. A lot of this is going to be transparent, cloud-based, so my question to the vendors is where I see IT going, this is how I see IT evolving, and I how I see business intelligence evolving. So how do mashups fit into here? How are mashups going to evolve with software as a service platforms, and infrastructure as a service...

Key Factors In Successful Business Intelligence - One of the key factors in successful business intelligence is a sound infrastructure. You are not going to be successful in operation BI unless you have a sound infrastructure to deliver data on time so your business can analyze that data in a timely way. So I think what InetSoft's BI solution brings to operation BI is a sound infrastructure that ties together disparate data sources via our proprietary data mashup technology. This also includes different ways of dealing with high workloads which becomes critical for delivering responsiveness in operational BI. How important is operational BI to predictive analytics? If we look at some of the applications in operational BI such as risk management, fraud detection, which are good examples of operational BI, money laundering would be another one, you have business rules that define potential problem situations...

Key For Any Successful Intelligent CRM Initiative - I can suggest that over the last 20 or so years 25 years, this type of customer profile has become the key for any successful intelligent CRM initiative. Those who do it well have a fighting chance of great success, and those who don’t do the profile well do not usually succeed in their CRM efforts. So the problem with the profile, I cannot keep kind from thinking about this the last years, it’s three fold. Number one is we look at this information. It’s static information. It might change daily, but as large an information database we can gather about the customer, the better. Maybe we can get some demographic or trends data, some type of behavioral, or maybe psychographic type of information. But to a large extent it's pretty static information. And one of the problems is in today’s world where 60% of the people depend on other people to tell them what they think about a company, versus the company themselves, in that world where 60% depend on others, we need to capture what people are saying about our company, which is the piece that is lacking in today’s customer profile, and we will address that in a little bit...

Labor Department Business Intelligence Example - The US Department of Labor (DOL) governs many aspects of employment law, pay, benefits, and rights of workers. To fulfill its mission, the DOL must acquire and manage vast amounts of data related to employment, productivity, salaries, and so on. The Department incorporates the Bureau of Labor Statistics to help assemble and manage this data. Some business-intelligence data exploration tools are provided to the public at https://www.bls.gov/data/apps.htm, and provide a glimpse of the kind of analysis and interpretation that needs to be performed on these large data sets to present meaningful insight. Among the information that the Department provides are facts about wages and salaries, workplace injuries, demographic breakdowns, and response of employment to natural disasters and catastrophic national events such as the COVID epidemic. To produce meaningful and informative narratives in all these areas requires powerful business intelligence tools that can analyze and process data in a variety of different ways and that can present the results in a manner that is accessible both to the public and to policy professionals...

Large Suite of Web Based Machine Intelligence Products - InetSoft's overall mission to help companies digitize. We see every company becoming a software-driven company, or software enabled company. Fundamentally this is about connecting things, connecting people, connecting businesses together with intelligence. InetSoft's offerings prove themselves along the spectrum with success factors. We have a large suite of web based machine intelligence products as well as superior collaboration in mobile tools. The way we approach machine learning and machine intelligence, it's a holistic one. When it comes to enabling the intelligent enterprise, it is about business outcomes that we're targeting. It's not technology for technology's sake, but really about the main factors I talked about earlier: increasing revenue, optimizing processes by reimagining them with digital intelligence, having more quality with work and employee engagement, as well as increasing customer satisfaction and retention. The way to do this is to have computers learn from data. We have the tool that's necessary to learn from data, and both models that add value to the enterprise by enabling digital intelligence. This is possible today because we're able to learn from the big data sets because we're leveraging technology advances like general purpose graphics processing units together with strong strategic technology partners like an Nvidia and Intel as well as deep learning algorithms where we partnered with Google and other advances in machine learning...

Law Firm Management Changed by Business Intelligence - Reynolds Porter Chamberlain (RPC), the London-based law company, was struggling. Due to ineffective practices, the firm's partners had to do a lot of basic legal work rather than delegating it to them. As a result, the clients and partners of RPC spent more money than they should have on legal work, and the reputation of the company was undermined, too. The main reason why RPC's lawyers struggled to do their job efficiently was the lack of access to business analytics. After the company's management reviewed the problem, they made a decision that changed the way the managers worked: provide them with access to a business analytics program with an intuitive dashboard on iPads which were given to the lawyers. As a result, RPC's clients started to delegate more legal work to the company and their individual bills were lowered. By changing the way employees obtained access to business intelligence, the company was able to make quicker and more effective decisions. RPC is, of course, just one example of how business intelligence has made a difference for a law firm. The global business intelligence market has been growing like crazy, with the current size of $63.3 billion projected to reach $97.3 billion by 2025...

Let's Explain Business Intelligence - Today’s topic, to explain business intelligence, is a tricky one. I struggle with the answer to this not because I don't know the answer, but rather because the answer is so different to so many different people. There is not just one definition of ‘What is business intelligence?’ Business intelligence is a massive term. It encompasses lots of different areas, and inevitably my definition is going to be different from someone else's. If you line up a hundred different consultants that are in the data warehousing industry, and you ask them to define business intelligence you're going to probably get some variant to about 50 to 75 answers. So I'm going to give you my view of it, but please understand this is one man's opinion. That doesn't make me right. It means that this is close, okay, but it doesn't mean that mine is the only version of ‘What is business intelligence’ that's out there, okay. So I just wanted to lead with that. All right so, business intelligence, this is the hot buzzword really for about the last four to five years, and it's only getting hotter. Data warehousing, business intelligence those are the hot markets to enter right now in the job market...

Live Reporting Software - When near live reporting is sufficient, Style Intelligence offers a proprietary technology called 'Data Grid Cahce.' It is based on Hadoop and Map/Reduce concepts, and it stores the data needed for a particular live report in a columnar disk-based cache along with the necessary indexes to support speedy data access. The software can automatically build these data grid caches on preferred schedules basis when the source datasets are particularly large, in the terabyte and up ranges, and when there is a requirement to minimize queries to live operational databases...

Location Intelligence Customer Examples - Another example of customers using location intelligence is telecommunications companies. They really have a lot of value in their assets, and a lot of those are location-based. For instance, a lot of communications companies will have fiber optic lines, coaxial, cell phone towers, and that is the heart of their business. They actually define their trade areas. Their customers are in close proximity to such assets. By integrating with BI data, these firms are making more insightful decisions on where to profitably build out their networks and identify the most cost-effective cross-sell opportunities. There are other industries. Healthcare, government organizations, financial services, they all use the combined location intelligence and business intelligence solutions as well. So it’s pretty prevalent across multiple industries. In our case, the location intelligence component is integrated into the BI application which allows users to continue with the workflows they are familiar with, instead of having to use a separate application...
