Hierarchical Data Visualization Dashboard - InetSoft's hierarchical data visualization dashboard allows users to modify and display analytic visual data in intuitive ways. A Selection Tree is a hierarchical Selection List, displaying selection choices in tree form. This allows the user to select values at multiple levels in the hierarchy. The user’s sections filter the data displayed in both output components and other selection elements. The Selection Tree is especially useful for data that is intrinsically hierarchical, such cities and states, but it can also be used for independent data. To create a Selection Tree from Data Block columns, follow these steps: 1. Expand a Data Block (table) in the Component tree. 2. Ctrl-click or Shift-click to select multiple columns in the Data Block. 3. Drag the selected columns onto the Viewsheet grid. This creates a Selection Tree based on the data in the selected columns, with the nesting order determined by the order in which you selected the fields in the Component tree...

Hospital Business Decision Support System - For the hospital business decision support system, the data came to us from Oracle. Originally we had a PM project product, and we purchased that product to support decision support. However the users throughout the systems, all the financial analysts and analysts and management wanted to have data that they can use InetSoft on top of. Management had decided to put the data into Vertica and put InetSoft on top. My team has integrated data from 38 large tables combining 800 columns into one huge integrated table with millions and millions of rows and our users today just put InetSoft right on top of it. The performance is very well received. I am talking about seconds not minutes. If we have some complicated report that generates for 19 seconds, it will break our heart, because it against everything we believe. To use this technology for this particular business intelligence project is really complicated. At first we used SQL and Microsoft SSAS, but it didn't work. We used InetSoft, and it worked. We had a question: how do we integrate large tables together not summarized but in detail format in a table with 800 columns and hundreds of millions rows and InetSoft on top. My team worked together, and we utilized technology that Vertica has...

How to Choose Dashboard Systems - Dashboard systems, also known as dashboard software, provide business users with an intuitive, easy-to-read, easy-to-use tool for monitoring their affairs. When a digital dashboard is created properly users are treated to a highly visual overview of their business. Choosing the right systems for your company may not always be the easiest task, however. There are three varieties of dashboard systems on the market today: web-based tools, standalone tools, and desktop widgets. Web-based tools are exactly what they sound like: dashboard systems hosted entirely online through your browser. Standalone dashboard systems require a software install on any computer intending to utilize the program. Desktop widgets tend to run in the background on most systems and are much smaller applications than their standalone brethren...

How Companies Are Using Dashboards - One interesting application of dashboards is displaying them on wall-mounted LCD’s such as in company lobbies or other private areas that employees walk by a lot. They really can draw attention to the KPIs that matter to a company and keep people focused on doing things that affect them. So they are not just seen on the desktop any more. Some companies project their KPI on the wall in a prominent location. There are also some interesting productivity enhancing applications for dashboards. Take for instance, in hospitals, you have wall-mounted dashboard displays showing the status of cleaned rooms in the ER, because they have such a high pressure to turn rooms around to get next productivity. These applications reflect the idea that the purpose of dashboards is not technology-drive, it’s adoption-driven. What gets look at, gets attention. It’s as simple as that. It’s a natural outcome to see improvements in these metrics. No matter what you tracking, what context it is, whether it’s a warehouse or a factory, you start seeing improvement by the people are responsible for the job the operation level. They realize what they are doing has direct impact on that metric that they see displayed on the wall each day. It speaks to the internal competitive drive people have and how much they enjoy scorekeeping and seeing the results of their efforts. The &more public, the better...

How To Develop Scorecards and Dashboards - Is there a good strategy for how to develop scorecards and dashboards? I am a huge believer in the incremental approach. You can start by understanding the vision and work on version 1 of the primary scorecard or dashboard. Deploy that to a hundred people. Then see what can be improved. Then roll out version 2 to the remaining thousands of people. So implementing an incremental approach to rolling out dashboards and learning from users along the away, that’s definitely the way you want to approach to a BI project. Whenever you apply a threshold and best practice to whatever performance data you are looking at, that’s a scorecard. For example, in healthcare, the government administration is setting what are the thresholds for how a hospital qualifies to get future business from Medicaid or Medicare. They have to have a certain level of infection rate, customer satisfaction, and quality of care. Once you apply to those mandates to your data, that’s a scorecard. So it’s a matter of context. You are measuring something and comparing to a particular corporate goal or benchmark. That’s really what a scorecard is. Quite honestly, the hardest part to make the scorecard is really finding what those KPIs are, not designing one. That’s the real challenge...

HTML5 BI Dashboard - HTML5 is a relatively new technology that is primarily used to display rich media on mobile devices. InetSoft offers a BI solution that is ideal for both desktop and mobile. So if you're looking for a tool that is compatible with HTML5, why are we mentioning Flash? The answer is simple: Flash is better suited for the job. Flash is not a new technology. It has been around for over 12 years and developers are very familiar with it. As such, it is more efficiently coded, supported, and implemented, resulting in better end user experience. Flash loads and executes about twice as fast as HTML5...

Industry Templates For Dashboards - Are there templates for dashboards for a given industry? It certainly is a big challenge for a company who doesn’t know what they want in their dashboard to start with a blank piece of paper. So it can be helpful to look at examples of ones that companies in your industry have created. So we try to share examples like that. It makes it easier to adopt. Another point about dashboard templates is that sometimes you want to have fairly rigid templates that people use, where they don’t have the data mashup capability, for instance. Let’s say you have a few thousand sales people. You want to have the same dashboard for each of them. You have to standardize on certain KPI, so everybody is going to see the same thing, and they can talk the same language. That’s not to say the dashboard is frozen over time. It can be refined, but the changes would be the same for everyone. Another example is in a hospital, where you have many physicians. You don’t want a customized dashboard for each physician. You don’t want them to be playing with their dashboard. It’s the roles like business analysts, CFOs, marketing VPs, or financial analysis who absolutely do not want to live with just a single template, and they need data mashup capabilities...

InetSoft Style Intelligence Over Periscope Data - When deciding which Business Intelligence (BI) software is best, the choice may be rather difficult, especially with so many options. One of the most effective and widely used tools is the balanced scorecard. Informational Dashboards - What if you could view the information you want, when you want, and however you want? Our innovative informational dashboards give you full control over your data. You'll never have to wait for IT to work through their massive backlogs before they can get to you ever again. For example, a train schedule displays dates horizontally across (column header), station names vertically down (row header), and departure times (measure) at the intersections. Not every row-column combination need have an associated measure value; for example, there may be combinations of date and station for which there is no corresponding train departure. In general, the values at the row-column intersections of a crosstab table represent summary information of a measure, rather than point values. For example, a crosstab table with row headers representing ‘Salesperson’ and column headers representing ‘Month of Year’ might contain values at the intersections representing ‘Average Sale Price’ or ‘Maximum Sale Price’. The measure in both cases is ‘Sale Price’. The summarization method is, respectively, Average or Maximum. By using summarization, crosstab tables display large amounts of data in a compact form...
